The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are
The idea of change has occurred to you and that is a big first step. When you realized that something was not working, what was your first instinct? You probably felt you must change your behaviour. Stop doing certain actions and start doing what will make the unpleasant elements disappear. Most of the time we start with reaction. Little do we realize that if you have followed something for a long time then things are not going to change in a few days’ time.
Habits die hard. For example, if we have go grown up on a staple diet of fast food and unhealthy habits, we have to give time for the changeover to happen. Did you look for instant gratification just because you thought “I want to change?”
We forget to reflect before acting. We forget to analyse what our behaviour has been so far, what made us go that route, how it has affected us and the list can go on. You start writing your list. Let’s say for example you find yourself suddenly out of a job you had for over 5 years. The first instinct is you start applying for every job, you ask around and call in your favours with friends or professional colleagues. You try for a long time and soon you feel the stress that you are not going anywhere with this approach. You now think “I have to do something different”. At least you realize something is not working therefore you must change.
Now you begin to slow down. You begin to see the change as an opportunity. You are on your way to a new path of self-discovery. Perhaps you feel that in your abundance you became complacent and forgot to learn new skills required to keep up with the times. It is time to get out of your comfort zone.
Self-discovery doesn’t mean that you give up your ambitions, your career, and your material life if you don’t want to. You don’t have to suddenly plunge into the wellness industry if you don’t want to. Self-discovery is just a way of life. Looking at things differently. It means that you are on your way to re-prioritize your values and beliefs. It may lead to a lot of changes in your lifestyle. The thing to keep in mind is that you are aware of yourself and he consequences of your choices. You could be offered an exact same job elsewhere but yet you may feel different because changes have happened internally and your attitude has changed to those very same elements.
There is a lot of advice, counselling, blogs, articles, websites and other products and services that cater to positive changes. But I struggled with taking the first step to act on the intentions. Are you struggling to take the first step to get up early go walking? or perhaps getting your CV right? You know that you need to learn that extra skill to compete for a better job but yet you get lost trying to work out the Whats, Whys and Hows?
You are not alone. What will set you apart is doing the ground work first. You have come at some crossroad in your life so before taking a path think, research, and gather knowledge about yourself. And about where you want to go now.
